about

Ed Nolbed was born sometime between 1994 & 1995 as a guest vocalist on the many fourtrack recordings I was doing back in those days. I was experimenting a lot and one day I recorded a song which featured a backing vocal that was backwards. I had first recorded guitar and voice and turned the tape around to record backwards vocals and guitar. The backing vocal repeated the backwards words it heard phonetically so that, once the tape was played in the normal direction, the backing vocals would sound understandable. Actually, this is much like the procedure David Lynch uses in Twin Peaks creating all the weird voices in the Lodge scenes. (I have to admit to being unfamiliar with twin peaks at that time in my life). But there he was, Ed Nolbed, my last name spelled backwards as the moniker for the reverse background vocalist. This moniker was soon to become my proper lofi alter ego.

Sometime later I discovered a tape label called Toothpick. I picked up a tape by WIO at the local record store in Bruges (Doctor Vinylla) and so discovered the tape label "toothpick". I decided to send them some of tunes and this eventually resulted in my first proper release ever: "Ed Nolbed - Ajjenol". This was soon followed by the epic "Nolbedlam" on Studio Muscle. I also got familiar with a tape label called "Bacchanalian Revel". I put some tracks on compilations of theirs and soon after that I released a tape of one track recordings I made during my stay in Austria, testamenting the weirdness and empty loneliness of that time.

What happened then is that a) I was invited to join 'de portables', b) I started making electronic music that had less to do with songs and that ended being released under the moniker "Köhn", c) Ed Nolbed was sort of put on hold, although I kept writing songs but never found a decent way to put them out anymore, d) I released a song oriented record on Tomlab as "Jürgen De Blonde" because I think I deemed the material neither "Köhn" nor "Ed Nolbed" although it's quite possible that Tom Steinle didn't like the name Ed Nolbed.

Anyways, Ed feels like he's been dormant for a real long time. He's been living like a recluse maybe? Making homeless songs. He's been living in his own private universe, looking for a way out. And now, he's finally back. And, shit yeah, it's cool. And shouldn't it be? Or something like that...

The truth is, there's tons and tons of songs lying around here, recorded since 1994. Some of them are good, some of them are questionable. But they're all looking for a purpose.
